Flames Win 9-8 in 14-Inning Marathon

Errors by Trevecca in Final Inning Helps Lee Prevail

In a baseball contest that lasted five hours and seven minutes, Lee scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the 14th inning to post an 9-8 victory over long-time rival Trevecca Nazarene on Tuesday evening at Olympic Field.

The Flames left 17 runners on base and the Trojans stranded 13. Lee used six pitchers and Trevecca five. The Flames went nine innings before scoring the winning run. Each team had 13 hits and Trevecca had seven costly errors.

After falling behind 8-7 in the top of the 14th, the Flames got some badly needed help when freshman Brayden Ware reached on an error. Kyle Briner followed with a walk and then the Trojans committed two errors on a ground ball by Ben Holland. The errors allowed Ware to score the tying run and Luke Toms played the role of hero when his line drive to left-center plated Briner with the winning run.

Briner also came on to work the final 4 2/3 innings and picked up his third pitching win of the season. He allowed two hits, one earned run and struck out seven Trevecca hitters. He did not issue a free pass. He was one of six Lee pitchers that went to the mound during the marathon event.

Trevecca jumped out to a 4-0 lead after 1 1/2 innings only to see the Flames score three times in the second and once in the third to tie the game at four. Lee would add three more runs to take a 7-4 lead after four innings but did not score again until the bottom of the 14th inning. On the other hand, Trevecca pecked away with single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings to tie the game at seven. They took the lead in the top of the 14th when Zach Tompkins walked, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored what could have been the winning run on a double by Chad Sutton.

Each team had 13 hits. Holland, Toms, Trent Hill and Chris Adams had two hits apiece for the Flames. Holland, Hill and Adams collected doubles. Geremy Walton homered in the second inning. Toms finished with a pair of RBI as did Miguel Pimentel. Hill and Adams also tallied a pair of runs.

Trevecca got four hits from Tyler Tichenor, who caused the Flames all types of problems the entire evening. He also scored twice and collected an RBI. Ethan Harrison, Sutton, Ryan Arington and Carter Wiseman doubled for the Trojans.

Lee starter Logan Campbell pitched 1 1/3 innings. Tyler Burcham came on to hurl an impressive 2 2/3 innings. He allowed only one hit while striking out five and allowing no walks. Gage Carpenter pitched two innings and struck out four while walking two. Christian Bokich contributed 2 1/3 innings, before Briner secured the victory.

Trevecca got five solid innings from reliever Christian Lohr. He surrendered just one hit, struck out three and walked two. Mason Dunn pitched 2 1/3 innings and was charged with the defeat.

The victory improved the Flames to 16-12 overall and was their seventh win over the last eight games. The stakes get much higher on Friday and Saturday when they travel to Valdosta State for a three-game Gulf South Conference series. Because of the Easter Holiday break, the Friday doubleheader will begin at 4 p.m. with a single nine-inning game to follow on Saturday.
