Holland, Briner Deliver In Flames' Bounce-Back Win

Holland Hits Walk-Off Homer In Thrilling 10-7 Victory

In a Gulf South Conference baseball contest that had more twists and turns than a Tennessee mountain road, Lee rebounded from a heartbreaking loss to the University of West Georgia on Saturday evening to find a way to post a badly-needed victory over the Wolves on Sunday afternoon.

Ben Holland, the home-run leader in NCAA Division II play, and had been searching for his first hit and a long ball in the three-game series, delivered a three-run, walk-off shot to right-center field in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Flames the emotional 10-7 win. It was his 10th dinger of the season.

The victory had more than its share of players stepping forward. Senior pitcher Kyle Briner entered the battle royal in the eighth inning. The Wolves had put two runs on the board after a sky-high, two-run blast over the left-field fence by Caleb Lopes.

Garrett Hayes, who had four hits in the thriller, followed with a two-base hit and Lee head coach Mark Brew quickly went to his senior leader to try and limit the damage.

Briner retired two straight Wolves in the eighth and came right back with three consecutive outs in the ninth to send the Flames into the bottom of the inning deadlocked at seven.

Junior Nate Wierzgac got the rally started in the ninth with a single. Geremy Walton put down a sacrifice bunt that moved Wierzgac to second.  West Georgia went to the bullpen and called on closer Tyler Gunnin, who had shut the door on a Lee rally in the 2-1 loss on Saturday.

MJ Brown looped a single to center to set the stage for Holland's dramatic homer. The celebration was on after the Lee slugger rounded third and was mobbed by his teammates as he touched home plate.

The GSC battle rocked back and forth all afternoon.  The Wolves went up 2-0 in the first inning, but Lee took a 3-2 lead in the second on singles by Trent Hill and Luke Toms. After Ty Broady reached on an error to load the bases, senior Chris Adams delivered a ringing double that plated all three runners.

Neither team scored again until the fifth inning when West Georgia had two hits, mixed in with a walk and two hit batters to plate two scores. Drew Eadyy got credit for an RBI when he received a walk and Payton Mann was hit by a pitch to put the visitors back up 4-3.

The margin grew to 5-3 in the sixth when the deadly left-handed hitting combination of Haynes and Dalton Rogers drilled a one-base knock and a double. Hayes finished the day with four hits.

Lee wasn't done and Hill made it a 5-4 affair when he ripped a 400-foot solo shot over the left-center field wall. The Flames went back on top in the bottom of the seventh 6-5 after Geremy Walton hooked a two-run homer around the foul pole in left field.

The Wolves were not about to surrender.  Lopes two-run home run put the Carrollton, Ga. club up 7-6, but back came the Flames when Hill collected his third hits of the afternoon, followed by an RBI single by Tom to tie the game at 7.

The rest of the story is history. Briner did his job on the mound and Holland's shot gave the Flames 2-7 in the conference and 8-10 overall the win over a West Georgia team that is 4-5 in the rugged GSC and 11-5 overall.

"That was a huge swing by Ben," said coach Brew. "They pitched him tough all weekend, but he came through when we needed it. Luke Toms and Trent Hill both had big weekends and we need them to get going so they can't pitch around Ben. Kyle Briner gave us a big lift out of the bullpen.

"This was a complete team win. I am very proud of our competitiveness and toughness today. That's what it takes to compete in this conference."

Hill was Lee's starting pitcher. The lefty hurled 4 2/3 innings and allowed four earned runs. He walked six hitters and got two strike outs. Christian Bokich gave Lee 2 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs. Briner was perfect in 1 2/3 innings and picked up his first pitching win of the year.

The Wolves used five pitchers. Brandon Goldsmith started and worked 6 1/3 innings, but Ethan Hunter was charged with the defeat.
