Wolves Edge Lady Flames, 2-1

Hughes Tallies Nine Strikeouts in Loss

Despite a couple of opportunities late in the contest to tie the game the Lee softball team came up a run short in falling to West Georgia, 2-1 in Sunday's series finale from Butler Field.

Stevie Baird reached on an error to lead off the seventh for the Lady Flames. After a strikeout, Lexie Dean singled to put two on with just one out. West Georgia's closer Danielle Easterly maneuvered out of the jam however as she recorded a strikeout and a fly out to seal the series sweep and notch her first save of the year.

Outside of Summer Wallace, Lee starter Angie Hughes had the Wolves number throughout the game. Wallace delivered RBI triples in the first and third inning to account for the only runs for West Georgia.

Hughes (3-7) allowed just four hits and worked around six walks to keep the Lady Flames within striking distance. The senior struck out nine.

"I thought Angie did a great job for us today," said head coach Emily Russell. "She pitched well yesterday but struggled against their righties. I thought today she attacked both the same way and had several 1-2-3 innings which was a big step for her."

West Georgia's starter Katie Shultes (6-2) earned the win for the visitors. She allowed just three hits and one run in six innings. Shultes walked four and fanned three.

Rachel Polacek delivered the lone run for Lee with a single up the middle to score Courtney Crawford in the fourth inning.

The elusive tying run was not to be found as the Lady Flames left nine runners on base in the game.

"Were in a bit of a rough spot right now but I thought we played better today. We just need to continue to trust the process and eventually we will be able to get pitching, hitting and defense all on the same page," concluded Russell.

Lee (9-13, 2-10) will look to jump back into the win column as they step out of conference to play at Tusculum on Thursday at 1 p.m. The Lady Flames will return to Butler Field on Saturday to test No. 6 North Alabama at 3 p.m.

The Wolves improve to 16-7 and are now 7-5 in the GSC.
