HARROGATE, Tenn. – Luke Toms, Ben Holland and Nate Wierzgac combined for 12 hits (four apiece) and seven RBI to carry the Lee baseball team to a back-and-forth 9-8 win over host Lincoln Memorial University on Wednesday afternoon.
Toms was a perfect 4-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI. Holland blasted his 11
th homer of the year. He also had a double, three RBI and scored two runs. Wierzgac stroked a homer and tallied three runs to go along with two RBI.
The Flames went right to work in the first inning and jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Holland ripped the four-bagger and Kyle Briner stroked his first home run of the year. The margin reached 4-0 in the second inning when Wierzgac doubled and scored on a single by Holland.
The Railsplitters (13-5) fought right back on a three-run homer by Joe Stucky in the bottom of the second. Lee countered back in the top of the fourth and went up 6-4 when Holland singled and Toms drilled a two-run homer.
LMU gained its first lead of the game (7-6) in the bottom of the same inning. Seth Hunt picked up a two-run triple and H.D. Dillard singled home Hunt.
Not to be outdone the Flames tied the contest in the fifth inning (7-7) when Wierzgac got his name in the home run column. Both teams were scoreless until the seventh. Wierzgac singled home Shea Durham to give Lee the 8-7 lead that lasted only to the bottom of the inning when Danny Valdez sent a shot out of the park to tie the thriller at eight.
Holland produced his second game-winner over the last three games when he doubled home Wierzgac in the top of the ninth.
However, the battle did not end without some excitement in the bottom of the ninth. After a one-out walk, Briner came on to replace Christian Bokich. The Railsplitters quickly collected a single and a walk to load the bases before Briner got Russell Clark to fly out and end the game.
Lee used five pitchers in picking up their ninth win of the year. Rob Gustitus started. Michael Ray followed before Dallas Bryan came on for 1 1/3 innings.Bokich picked up the win after tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Briner registered the save.
The Flames will get a day off before moving back to Gulf South Conference action, hosting North Alabama. The three-game series has been moved up to Friday and Saturday because of rain predicted to move into the area later in the weekend.
