BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Lee University men's tennis team's first official year in NCAA Division II came to an end Thursday afternoon with a 5-0 loss to No. 3 seeded and No. 44 ranked University of North Alabama in the Gulf South Conference (GSC) Tournament quarterfinals. The No. 6 seed Flames end their season at 12-11.
North Alabama (12-3) swept the doubles competition to carry a 3-0 lead into the singles matches. Jake Okines and Charles Jabaley lost 8-1 to Miguel Garcia and Taylor Ausbon. Benjamin Poire and Max Druppel defeated Rhys Milne and Boyd Blackburn, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. Guillaume Dechoz and Brendon Millington-Herrmann held off Eirik Groner and Karl Hulten for the 8-6 win at the No. 1 slot.
Max Druppel was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Hulten at No. 5 singles and Poire fought off Blackburn for the match-clinching 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles.
"We played some really good, tough singles today," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "It would have been fun to play it out, just to see where things fell, but it was a good match for our guys and a much improved season. I'm very excited for next year already with this group."
Groner won his first set 6-3 over Dechoz and was trailing 5-4 in the second set when their No. 1 singles match was left unfinished. Milne led Milington-Herrmann 3-2 in the third set of their unfinished match.
UNA had two players that won their opening sets and were trailing in the second set when the team match was decided.
