Angie Hughes and Leigh Beatenbough combined for 16 strikeouts and allowed no runs and just seven hits over 12 innings of work to lead the Lee softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Christian Brothers University on Saturday afternoon from Butler Field.
The Lady Flames (23-22-1, 9-18-1) have now won nine straight games and will look to extend that streak in tomorrow's series finale with CBU (9-37, 3-26) beginning at 2 p.m. Following the contest the Lee softball team will honor its six seniors in a special ceremony.
Senior first baseman Lexie Dean recorded four hits in the two games and is now the all-time hits leader in Lee softball history with 276 passing Anna Coscorrosa's mark of 275 set in 2014.
GAME 2 – LEE 8 CBU 0 (Five Innings)
The Lady Flames scored in each inning to run-rule the Lady Bucs, 8-0 in five frames in the nightcap.
Beatenbough was sharp from start to finish to earn her team-leading ninth victory of the season. The sophomore allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out six over five scoreless innings.
The Lee offense pounded out five doubles in the contest. In the second inning Emily Dagnan opened things up with a bases-loaded three-run double to give the Lady Flames a 4-0 advantage.
In the third inning it was Courtney Crawford's turn as she laced a two-run double into the left-centerfield gap. Dean would follow with one of her two singles to extend the margin to 7-0.
The final run scored on a sunshine double by Leigh Beatenbough in the fourth inning. Beatenbough hit a high pop fly towards the outfield but the Lady Bucs' centerfielder had trouble locating the ball in the bright sunshine.
Amanda Lynn set the table with a double and single and scored twice. Stevie Baird also double in the contest while Annabeth Pruett scored a pair of runs.
Amber Johnson doubled and Olivia Parsels added a single to lead Christian Brothers.
GAME 1 - LEE 2 CBU 0
Hughes (9-11) dazzled in the circle striking out 10 batters to lead the Lady Flames to a 2-0 victory over the Lady Bucs in game one on Saturday.
The senior from Blairsville, Ga. continues to add to her career strikeout mark. Hughes is the all-time leader in punch outs in Lee softball history with 652 in 575.1 innings pitched.
Dean got the Lady Flames on the board with a RBI double in the second inning. Pruett would add an insurance run in the fourth inning drove to make it 2-0. Beatenbough scored both of the runs in the contest.
Sierra Anderson (0-10) kept Christian Brothers within striking distance allowing just two runs on seven hits over her six innings of work.
Hughes battled out of a jam in the final inning. After two quick strikeouts, Christian Brothers put the tying run on base with a Holly Oyhenart single and a Maddi Welch walk before Hughes slammed the door getting Blake Andres to fly out to right.
