CLINTON, Miss. – After winning the first game 5-0, the Lee Flames saw their 10-game Gulf South Conference winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon, losing 3-2 to host Mississippi College. At the same time the Choctaws ended an 11-game GSC losing streak.
The loss dropped the Flames to 17-10 in the tight GSC race and 29-15 overall. The two club will tangle again on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the three-game series (3 p.m. EDT).
MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 3, LEE 2
Mississippi College jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Hunter Bolin singled and Colton Caver followed with a two-run homer.
The Flames cut the margin to 2-1 in the second when Geremy Walton walked with the bases loaded to score Chris Adams. However, the Choctaws tallied a solo run in the bottom of the third to increase the margin to 3-1.
Lee cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of fifth and left runners on first and third. Walton reached on a bunt single. Holland walked and Walton scored on a single by Trent Hill.
Justin Alleman started and lasted only two inning. The right-hander allowed five hits and three earned runs. Lefty Tyler Burcham came out of the pen to give the Flames four solid innings. He allowed only three hits and fanned six while not walking a hitter.
Samuel Harrison pitched six innings and worked his way in and out of jams for the Choctaws. He allowed six hits, walked three and struck out five.
Tyler Scholl came on to work the seventh and got the save. He walked Holland and the Lee runner advanced to second on a wild pitch. Toms and Kyle Briner went down swinging to end game.
LEE 5, MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 0
Junior lefty Art Vidrio picked up his third straight pitching win, hurling a 1-hit shoutout in the opening game of a doubleheader. Vidrio fanned six and walked two,improving his record to 6-3 overall. Vidrio had a no-hitter going until Hunter Bolin singled in the sixth inning.
The Flames scored two runs in the fourth inning to break open a scoreless game. Ben Holland reached on an error. Luke Toms walked and Holland advanced to third and Toms to second on a passed ball. Trent Hill picked up an RBI with a groundball out and MJ Brown singled home Toms.
Lee put the contest out of reach in the seventh, scoring three runs after two men were out. Walton walked and Payne was hit by a pitch. Briner picked up a free pass to load the bases and Holland walked with the sacks jammed to score Walton. Toms drove home Payne and Briner with a single.
The Flames made the best of only five hits in the win. Holland doubled while Toms, Brown, Walton and Payne got one-base knocks.
