Flames Complete 3-Game Sweep of No. 5 West Alabama

Senior Trent Hill Continues to Pace the Flames in Sunday's 5-2 Victory

Lee completed a three-game sweep of No. 5-ranked University of West Alabama on Sunday afternoon at Olympic Field and coach Mark Brew wasted no time in praising his baseball team, saying. "This was a huge weekend for our program. I'm really proud of this team. To sweep a program like West Alabama speaks volumes about our team overcoming adversity,"

Again it was senior Trent Hill who played a major role in the 5-2 win over the Tigers. The Lee lefty pitched 6 2/3 innings and posted his fourth win of the year. He did not allow an earned run, surrendering four hits, walking five and striking out five.

At the plate, Hill also had a double and a single, driving in two runs and scoring once. "Trent once again led the way. He struggled early on the mound, but really found his groove in the middle innings. He had big hit after big hit all weekend," pointed out Brew.

For the series, Hill had six hits including a home run and three doubles. He drove in nine runs and scored a couple of times. His final stats note that he was a part of 11 of the 17 runs scored in the three wins by the Flames.

While Hill was getting credit for the pitching win, junior left-hander Tyler Burcham came in with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and helped seal the deal for the Flames, who went over the .500 mark in the GSC standings (10-9) and scored their 20th overall victory of the season against 13 defeats.

Lee went right to work in the bottom of the first inning when Tyler Payne singled, took second on a wild pitch and stole third. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Hill. The contest rocked along at 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth. Hill walked, went to third on a double by Luke Toms and scored on a balk by West Alabama starting pitcher Evan Miller. Toms made it a 3-0 game when he raced home on a single by Nate Wierzgac.

Two insurance runs followed in the sixth inning. Payne stroked his second single of the day and advanced on a one-base hit by Ben Holland. It was Hill's time to shine again as he greeted Tiger relief pitcher Jonathan Porter with a two-base hit to left-center field. Payne scored on the play and Holland raced home on an error by the West Alabama left-fielder.

The Tigers fought back in the seventh. Jack Cockrum and Mitch Holgate walked. Jake Bush was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Burcham made his appearance on the mound and limited the West Alabama damage to only one run.

The Tigers posted another run in the eighth to cut the margin to 5-3 when Josh Winningham tripled and scored on a ground ball out. The visitors didn't go quietly in the ninth, recording a couple of singles before Burcham got a strikeout and a ground ball hit right back to him.

The Flames have now won 11 of their last 13 games and will return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Greenville, Tenn. to test Tusculum College in a non-conference, nine-inning game. Next Saturday and Sunday they will be back in GSC action, testing Union University in Jackson, Tenn.
