Facing the No. 18 team in the country the Lee softball team didn't back down and registered a big doubleheader sweep of Young Harris College on Wednesday evening from Butler Field.
The Lady Flames are now 18-22-1 overall and have won four straight. The Mountain Lions, members of the Peach Belt Conference, fall to 28-14.
Lee will look to keep the winning streak alive as it travels to Jackson, Tenn. on Saturday to open up a three-game series with Union University.
GAME 1 – LEE 10 YHC 2
The Lady Flames erupted for five runs in the sixth inning to run-rule Young Harris 10-2 in the opener.
Senior catcher Emily Dagnan got the rally going for the Lady Flames with a solo home run to extend the lead to 6-2. Annabeth Pruett would drive in the second run of the inning after working a bases loaded walk.
Junior Courtney Crawford ripped a single up the middle to make it 8-2. After Leigh Beatenbough scored on a wild pitched, Lexie Dean ended the game with a RBI double to stretch the Lady Flames' margin to eight.
The Lee offensive pounded out 13 hits to back a strong outing from starter Leigh Beatenbough (5-8). The sophomore pitcher labored through the first inning allowing two runs on four walks but rallied to toss five scoreless innings allowing just one walk while striking out three.
Despite entering with a 1.40 ERA and 21 victories the Lady Flames offense jumped on Young Harris starter Darby Stanford for seven runs in five plus innings. She walked three and struck out a batter. Jeanie Perrucci came on in relief but labored through 2/3 innings giving up two hits, three walks and three runs.
Nia Ceasar got the Lady Flames going with a RBI single in the first frame. She finished with a pair of hits. Freshman third baseman Stevie Baird was a perfect 3 for 3 with a RBI and two runs scored. Lexie Dean doubled and had a pair of singles. Dean is currently .462 with 13 doubles and 39 RBI.
Emily Dagnan launched her sixth home run of the season in the fifth inning.
GAME 2 – LEE 5 YHC 4
With the game on the line in the top of seventh Leigh Beatenbough came on in relief with the bases loaded and just a one-run lead and struck out the final two batters to seal a 5-4 for win for the Lady Flames over the Mountain Lions and earn her second save of the year in Wednesday's nightcap.
Angie Hughes (8-11) started and earned her third straight victory in the circle for Lee. She struck out eight and worked around seven walks allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits.
Young Harris jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning on a Grace Botti single. Botti finished with two RBI.
The Lady Flames responded with an RBI infield single from Annabeth Pruett in the bottom of the fifth to knot things ups at 3-3.
Lee jumped ahead on a sacrifice fly from Emily Dagnan and got the all-important insurance run on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Hallie Davis in the bottom of the sixth. Dagnan added a double in the contest to record the lone extra base hit.
Dean added two more hits and scored a run. Shortstop Amanda Lynn was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and made plenty of acrobatic defensive plays to keep Young Harris at bay.
Mary Catherine Smith (2-3) was tagged with the loss. She pitched all six innings allowing five runs on 10 hits and walked five.
