Flames Edge Carson-Newman, 5-4

End Two-Match Losing Streak

The Lee University men's tennis team ended a two-match losing streak with a 5-4 victory over Carson-Newman University Friday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Flames (11-9) host Georgetown College at 2 p.m. EDT on Saturday.

Rhys Milne and Boyd Blackburn put the Flames on the board first with an 8-5 win over Joao Oliveira and Jesus Barcete. Carson-Newman (6-11) would get the equalizer with a 9-7 advantage by Stefano Daza and Juan Sebastian Perez against Eirik Groner and Karl Hulten. Jake Okines and Charles Jabaley needed a 7-2 mark in a tie-breaker to record the 9-8 win at No. 3 doubles. The win gave the Flames a 2-1 lead heading into the singles competition.

Okines and Groner pulled Lee to within one point with wins at No. 3 and No. 1 singles, respectively. Okines beat Daza 6-2, 6-3 and Groner was a 6-4, 7-5 winner against Oliveira.

Perez cut Lee's lead to two with a three-set win over Milne at the No. 2 spot. Milne won the opening set 6-2 before Perez used a 7-5 tie-breaker to force a third set with a 7-6 second-set score. Perez claimed the match with a 6-4 mark in the final set.

Blackburn took down Marc Bantel 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles to secure the team win.

Barcete won in three sets over Jabaley. Barcete won the first set, 6-4, and the super-set tie-breaker 10-8. Jabaley was a 6-0 winner in the second set.

Mendes was also taken to a third-set super-set tie-breaker by Hulten. Mendes posted a 6-3 mark in the first set and Hulten won the second set 6-4. Mendes supplied the final team margin with a 12-10 decision in the final set.
