ROME, Ga. – The blistering-hot temperature and the artificial turf was not enough to slow the Lee women's soccer team as they handily defeated host Shorter University 5-1 for its fifth straight victory on Sunday afternoon.
Summer Lanter and Kinsey Cichowitz combined to score all five of Lee's goals. Lanter now has six goals on the year and midfielder Cichowitz has three.
The win improves Lee's record to 6-1-1 overall and 2-0 in Gulf South Conference play. The Lady Flames will remain on the road for two more GSC matches next week. They will travel to Memphis to face Christian Brothers on Friday and then move over to Jackson, Tenn. and test Union University next Sunday.
"I'm Very pleased again with result," said head coach Chris Hennessey. "The girls did a great job adapting to the conditions, field and brutal heat, as well as staying focused the whole game and out working Shorter."
The 13
th-ranked Lady Flames wasted little time getting on the scoreboard when Lanter tallied on an assist from Katie Cloud at the 5:15 mark of the opening half.
The Lady Hawks struck right back and tied the contest some three minutes later (8:27) when Taylor Hendrix scored on an assist from Tabea Krichner. Lee responded and took the lead for good on Cichowitz's goal (17:13).
The margin reached 3-1 in the 30
th minute when Lanter scored again. McKenzie Bricker dished off the assist. The Lady Flames defense held Shorter to only three shots the entire first 45 minutes. At the same time, the Lady Flames were firing 11 shots at the Lady Hawks' defense.
"Again, we created plenty of chances," noted the Lee coach. "But I was especially pleased with our third goal. The movement was excellent on that score."
Lee's fourth goal of the match came off an unassisted goal by Cichowitz, her second of the game and third on the year. And for good measure, Lanter stepped in and tallied her third goal of the afternoon (86:40) on a well-played assist by Kaela Leskovar.
The Lady Flames finished the afternoon with 26 shots and 13 were on goal. On the other side, the Lady Hawks could muster up only four shots for the entire 90 minutes and two were on goal. Haley Gribler was in goal for the first 45 minutes and came up with a save, while keeper Erin Olson did not face a shot in the second half.
"I was happy that everyone was able to play a part in today's game. All in all we got the job done and now we have to get ready for a tough trip to Christian Brothers and Union next weekend," concluded Hennessey.
