MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After storming out to a big halftime lead the Lee women's basketball team watched it slip away after scoring just 14 second half points in falling to Christian Brothers, 60-55 on Thursday evening.
Erin Walsh led the Lady Flames with 17 points, 14 of those coming in the first half. Freshmen guards Abby Bertram (12 points) and Lindsey Roddy (11 points) joined Walsh in double-figures. Â Roddy added seven rebounds while Anna Woodford pulled down eight boards.
After shooting a sizzling 60 percent from the floor and canning 7 of 11 treys in the first half the offense went cold in the second half hitting just 5 of 27 field goals and only 2 of 11 3-pointers to open the door for the home team.
Christian Brothers took full advantage as it reversed the script after shooting just 23 percent in the first half (6 of 26) the Lady Bucs heated up hitting 48 percent (13 of 27) from the field in the second half while stifling the Lee offensive attack.
Samantha Reeves single-handily took over the contest scoring over half of the Lady Bucs' total points with 31 markers while grabbing eight rebounds. Reeves was 10 of 18 from the floor and canned three triples while nailing 8 of 10 foul shots. Rachel Lee followed with 10 points.
The Lady Flames opened the contest on an 11-3 run and used that momentum to cruise into halftime up 41-20. At the end of the third quarter Lee still held a comfortable 51-36 lead before the Lady Bucs dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring Lee 20-4 to secure the comeback victory.
"We have a huge flaw with our team. We've been in this situation twice now in the last five days. Every team has flaws and for some unexplainable reason ours just happens to be when we get out to a big lead," said head coach Marty Rowe after the game. "We couldn't make a shot or lay up in the fourth quarter and couldn't make a stop on the other end. It just got away from us and we didn't have anybody step up to stop it. Union is going to be an extremely hard game on Saturday so we've got to find a way to play a full 40 minutes."
Rowe's club held a 36-31 advantage on the glass. Lee was guilty of 16 floor mistakes while Christian Brothers committed just 10 turnovers.
The Lady Flames had won the previous six meetings with the Lady Bucs. The loss drops the Lady Flames to 10-4 overall and 5-3 in league play. The resurgent Christian Brothers team improves to 8-5 and 5-4 in the Gulf South Conference.
Lee will look to rebound on Saturday as it heads over to Jackson to battle old rival Union University at 3:00 p.m.
