ROME, Ga. – Playing one of its most complete games of the year the Lee women's basketball team traveled to Shorter University and shot down the rival Hawks, 74-56 on Monday evening.
Junior Erin Walsh broke out of a recent shooting slump to finish with a game high 22 points while canning 4 of 7 3-pointers to pace the Lee offense. Walsh was 8 of 12 from the field and leads the team with 14.7 points per game.
After a back and forth first quarter the Lady Flames broke things up in the second frame as they outscored the Hawks, 17-7 to take a 13-point lead into the halftime break. Lee shot 65 percent in the second half to keep control of the contest throughout the evening.
"I thought we played a really complete 40 minutes," said head coach Marty Rowe. "We competed on the defensive end and played for each other on the offensive end."
The Lee offense shot a sizzling 60 percent from the floor (24 of 40) and poured in 8 of 14 from the beyond the arc. Thanks to the smothering Lee defensive effort Shorter was limited to just 36.5 percent (19 of 52) shooting from the field.
Carrie Cheeks had 11 points and five rebounds. Abby Bertram added 10 points and dished off seven assists while Haley Cornellison joined her teammates in double-figures with 10 points off the bench.
Raven Flair tallied 13 points to lead the Hawks. Taylor Adams followed with 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the contest. Adams scored 31 points in Lee's 79-70 victory back on Dec. 3.
Lee's Shelby Brown crashed the glass for eight rebounds and helped the Lady Flames out-rebound Shorter by a 36-20 margin.
"Tonight was a total team effort and our players should take pride in how we competed," added a pleased Rowe.
With the season sweep of Shorter the Lady Flames improve to 14-6 overall and move into a three-way tie for second in the GSC at 9-5. The Hawks are now 7-12 and drop to 6-8 in league play.
The conference grind continues on Thursday as Lee will play its third game in a week as North Alabama comes to town for the annual "Hoops For Hope Game" at 6 p.m. The Lions are tied with the Lady Flames and Valdosta State for second place in the conference. West Florida holds down the top spot with a two-game advantage at 11-3.
