MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In their first meeting since 2012, the Lee University women's soccer team defeated Auburn University at Montgomery, 2-0, in a Gulf South Conference (GSC) matchup Friday night at the AUM Soccer Complex. With the win, the Lady Flames (9-4, 8-2 GSC) moved into a second-place tie with Mississippi College. North Alabama remains at the top of the standings at 9-1-1.
"Obviously, we are happy to get the road victory and I'm really proud of our defensive effort in keeping the clean sheet," said Lee head coach Chris Hennessey.
Sophomore Riley Engels tallied both of Lee's goals. Her first score came just 3:37 into the match with a shot that went off a defender's head. Engels supplied an insurance goal in the 75
th minute with another unassisted score.
"Offensively, it's a bit of the same story for us tonight as we did a really nice job of creating chances, but failed to capitalize on several good scoring opportunities," added Hennessey. "We will look to finish those chances on Sunday."
Lee fired off 25 shots and placed 10 on goal, while their defense held AUM (4-8, 3-6 GSC) to just four total shots. The Lady Flames also held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Taylor Green stopped the only shot she faced to record her second shutout of the season.
The Lady Flames will remain on the road to face The University of Montevallo Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. EDT. It is the final road contest of the regular season.
