HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Lee volleyball team outlasted Alabama Huntsville, 3-1 to claim its fifth straight Gulf South Conference victory on Tuesday night.
All four sets came down to the final points in the action-packed match as the Lady Flames sealed the road victory on Silvia Sartori's 13th kill of the night to win the fourth and final set, 25-22. Lee hit .333 as a team in the decisive game to go along with 17 slams.
Alex Reuter led Lee with 14 kills on a sizzling .400 hitting percentage and Sadie Johnson got the offense in motion with 31 assists. Sartori added 11 digs to complete her 10
th double-double of the season. The junior has posted double-figure kills in all but one match this year.
Bailey Kress struck for seven kills while showcasing her leaping ability with five blocks defensively. Makayla Beebe flew around the court for 20 digs and ranks in the top five in both total digs and digs-per-set in the GSC this season.
The Lady Flames fell behind early 12-7 in the opening set but scored the next six points to take a 13-12 lead en route to a 25-23 victory.
The Chargers would return the favor in similar fashion winning set two by the same margin before the Lady Flames won the all-important set three, 26-24 thanks to a service error and an attack error by UAH.
"I was glad to see the girls keep fighting," said head coach Andrea Hudson as she recorded her 802
nd victory of her career. "Right now our toughest opponent is ourselves. But I think each match we are getting better. Alex really stepped up as a hitter tonight as well."
Caroline Sanford led Alabama Huntsville with 12 kills and five blocks. Isabelle Barnes pitched in 11 slams and five blocks of her own while Haley Hop provided 20 digs and eight assists.
The victory moves Lee to 11-3 overall and 5-2 in the GSC. The Chargers fall to 12-7 and are now an even 3-3 in league play.
The Lady Flames will look to make it six wins in a row as they host rival Shorter University on Saturday afternoon on the sport court in Walker Arena. First serve of the GSC showdown is set for 1 p.m.
