Blazers Slip Past No. 24 Lady Flames, 1-0

Lee Creates Chances But No Goals In Loss To VSU

In what has become an all too familiar refrain the Lee women's soccer team failed to find the back of the net in dropping a hard fought battle with Valdosta State, 1-0 on Friday night from the Lee Soccer Field.

The No. 24 Lady Flames outshot the Blazers 13-1 in the second half but could not find the equalizer in dropping the Gulf South Conference match. Overall Lee had 17 shots and placed eight on frame while Valdosta State sat back most of the second half and had just five shots and three on goal.

Riley Tennant scored the lone goal as she won a 50-50 ball in the air against Lee keeper Haley Gribler and scored in the 35th minute. Paige Taylor sent the ball into the box and was credited with the assist.

Gribler suffered the tough-luck loss in net as she allowed the one goal and registered a pair of saves.

Alyssa Curtis, playing for the first time since Sept. 17, came up with eight saves in keeping the clean sheet for the Blazers while facing a barrage of shots in the second period.

Summer Lanter led the Lady Flames in shots with four and placed three on frame.

"Credit to Valdosta they are well organized but I thought we were very flat in the first 45 minutes and that really cost us," noted head coach Chris Hennessey. "We got a lot of chances in the second half but we've got to find a way to score. There are some positives we can take away but in the end we have to play a full 90 minutes and we have to capitalize on good scoring chances."

Lee falls to 7-4 overall and 6-2 in league play. All four of the Lady Flames defeats this season have come by a score of 1-0. Valdosta State improves to 7-3-1 on the year and 5-2-1 in the GSC.

There won't be much time to recover for the Lady Flames as they will head right back on to the pitch tomorrow for a 5 p.m. kickoff with West Florida. The game was originally scheduled for a Sunday afternoon kickoff but was moved due to heavy rain in the forecast.
