Summer Lanter headed home a goal in the 61
st minute set up off a shot from Suzanne Arant to lead the No. 24 Lee women's soccer team past West Florida, 3-2 on Saturday evening at the Lee Soccer Field.
The action-packed match featured four first half goals but it was the Lanter header of a shot from senior midfielder Arant that was the difference.
Lanter scored her GSC leading fifth game winning goal and now leads the league in total scores with eight. Lanter headed home the second Lady Flames goal off a cross from Riley Engels in the 24
th minute to knot things up at 2-2.
Engels would team up with Lanter to get Lee on the board before many of the fans had found a comfortable seat. Engels received a pass from the senior forward and smoked a shot into the far left corner of the goal to give the home team the early advantage at the 2:08 mark.
"I thought it was total team effort tonight," said a pleased head coach Chris Hennessey. "I particularly thought Suze (Arant) played fantastic for us in the midfield and she was great last night as well."
Haley Gribler earned the victory in net for Lee with a pair of saves. Katelyn Burkhart was tagged with the loss for the Argos as she allowed three goals while registering five saves.
Grace Busby cleaned up a loose ball in front of the net to get West Florida on the board in the 11
th minute. Leonie Kreil would hammer home a penalty kick just six minutes later to give the Argonauts a brief 2-1 lead.
Lee tallied 16 shots in the contest and made most of them count placing eight on frame. The Argonauts took 13 shots but only four were on target.
Playing less than 24 hours after a tough loss to Valdosta State on Friday Hennessey was proud of his team's effort and focus throughout the physically demanding match, "We competed and bounced right back after last night's match and that shows the toughness and character of this team."
The Lady Flames improve to 8-4 overall and are 7-2 in league play. The loss drops the Argonauts to 7-3-1 and 4-2-1 in the GSC.
Lee will head on the road for a pair of matches in Alabama next week. The Lady Flames will visit to an old rival in Auburn Montgomery on Friday before testing Montevallo on Sunday (Oct. 15).Â
