Flames Battle Argos To 0-0 Draw

Putnam, Defense Stifle West Florida Offense

The Lee men's soccer team settled for a 0-0 double overtime draw with West Florida on Saturday night from the Lee Soccer Field.

It was another solid effort for Lee keeper Tristen Putnam and the defense of Jake Brown, Jeremy Bonyaa, Jay Luzardo and Samir Williams as they posted their fifth clean sheet of the year. Putnam kept West Florida off the board with two acrobatic saves in the second half and finished the match with seven total.

The senior from Forney, Texas has a 0.69 goals against average and a 0.867 save percentage. Coming into tonight's match Putnam ranked 15th nationally and second in the league in save percentage and 25th nationally and second in the GSC in goals against average.

The two teams battled for 110 minutes with Lee holding a 15-12 advantage in shots. The Argonauts were more accurately however as they placed seven on frame compared to just two for Lee.

Drew Jackson led the Lee offensive with four shots. Jose Orellana tallied three shots and had two close chances late in the second half but couldn't find the back of the net.

Jacob Murray had a pair of saves while keeping the Flames off the board.

"This was always going to be battle and we knew that coming in but I thought this was one of our better competitive performances. There's some things we could have done better but I thought we battled for all 110 minutes," said head coach Derek Potteiger. "I thought we were going to get that goal but as has been the case for us this season we had a span of five or six minutes where we were really threatening had good chances but we just couldn't find that extra pass or space to finish off the goal."

It was a quick turnaround for both clubs. Lee played at Spring Hill on Thursday while West Florida won in overtime at Shorter on Friday.

The Flames (4-4-3, 3-3-1) are now 0-0-3 in overtime matches this season while the Argonauts fall to 4-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the GSC.

"We'll get ourselves prepared for the road next weekend and we know every conference match is going to be a battle so we will be ready to play," concluded Pottegier.

Up next for the Flames will be a trip down to Alabama to take on Auburn Montgomery Friday evening. Lee blanked the Warhawks, 6-0 last season.
