The Lee volleyball team cruised past the West Georgia Wolves, 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-18) in the Annual Volley For A Cure Match in front of a pink-filled, jammed packed Walker Arena crowd on Friday night.
Silvia Sartori had six big slams in the first set and finished with nine in the contest to lead the Lady Flames. The junior's seventh kill on the evening was the 1,000 of her career.
"I knew I was close but I wasn't really thinking about the number during the match," said Sartori, a two-time all-conference selection. "It surprised me when I heard the announcement but I didn't want it to be about me I was just trying to help the team."
When asked about Volley For A Cure Sartori added, "This is one of my favorite games and so many people come out and support this cause and cheer us on. I really enjoy this whole week because we get to interact with so many people and in some small way can help make a difference in their lives so it's always a really special time."
"I was excited to hear that Silvia was close to that milestone," said head coach Andrea Hudson. "She has meant so much to our team and for her to have knee surgery last year and work so hard to get back for this year it was nice to see her reach this mark and she continues to be a big reason for our success."
Senior Ellisia Kimble played a near flawless match as she fired home eight kills and did not commit an error for a red hot .615 hitting percentage.
Brooke Wilsman, Sadie Johnson and Kristi Farley also made the most of their senior night. Wilsman had six kills and nine digs while Johnson delivered 23 assists and seven digs and Farley pitched in 18 helpers to go along with seven digs of her own.
"We only have a few matches left so we came out focused tonight and ready to play. West Georgia snuck up on us last year so we know what they are capable of doing when they play together," said Hudson. "We get a little more time to rest with tomorrow being an evening start but we know how dangerous Montevallo can be and we really were focused when we played them earlier because they had just beat North Alabama, who only has two losses this year."
As a team the Lady Flames recorded 53 slams and hit .356 while limiting the Wolves to just 26 slams and a .140 hitting mark.
Autumn Burnette led the Wolves with 10 kills while McKenna Wharton and Anjelina Webb had five slams each. The loss drops West Georgia to 4-24 on the year and 3-11 in the GSC.
The Lady Flames improve to 17-8 overall and are now 8-5 in conference play. This past week Lee made its very first appearance in the NCAA South Region Rankings coming in at No. 7.
Lee will get right back on the sport court tomorrow evening as they host Montevallo at 7 p.m. The Lady Flames scored a 3-0 road victory against the Falcons earlier this year.
