Colton Blevins scored 14 points and the Lee men's basketball team limited Auburn Montgomery to just 32 percent shooting from the field to roll to an 82-63 victory to open up Gulf South Conference play on Thursday night in Walker Arena.
Blevins got the Flames going early inside and finished the contest 7 of 12 from the field. Lee doubled up the Warhawks 44-22 on points in the paint and held a 35-29 advantage on the glass.
The Flames held a 12-point advantage at halftime and led by as many as 24 in the second half as they pulled away from AUM late in the game. Darrion Taylor canned a 3-ball for the visitors with 10:20 remaining to pull the Warhawks within seven at 54-47 before Lee ended the game on a 28-15 run.
Ryan Montgomery added 11 points and four rebounds while Parker Suedekum pitched in 11 of his own to go along with four assists and four boards. Chase Cullen muscled his way to eight points and nine rebounds in the contest.
"I love playing in front of the home crowd. I enjoy getting them into the game and they do a great job giving us energy," said senior guard Levi Woods who added eight points and dished off three assists. "We talked about not dwelling on Saturday's loss and getting back to work in practice and having good energy and focus tonight and I think we were able to accomplish those things in the game."
The Flames finished shooting 54.5 percent from the field and canned six triples. The Warhawks hit just 32 percent of their shots and were limited to only nine field goals in the second half. Lee ranks third in the GSC defensively allowing just 67 points per game.
"I thought our defensive intensity was really good tonight. I thought our guys really paid attention to detail and executed the game plan so I was really pleased with that. I was also pleased that every guy that stepped on the court contributed with good energy and rebounded the ball and had good defensive focus," said head coach Bubba Smith. "Colton was really efficient tonight. He's very skilled for a big man and when we get him the ball in the right spots he does a nice job for us. We are such an unselfish team and that allows us to play and get meaningful minutes from several guys up and down the lineup."
The Warhawks were led by Desmond DeRamus who tallied 17 points and was a perfect 5 of 5 from the free throw line. Jarrett Croff added 16 points and six rebounds and Taylor hit three 3-pointers to finish with 17 points. Despite struggling from the field the Warhawks did connect on 26 of 30 from the charity stripe.
With the win the Flames improve to 5-1 on the year and are 1-0 in the GSC. The loss drops AUM to 3-4 and 0-1 in league play.
Lee will continue its three-game home stand on Saturday as it takes on West Georgia at 4 p.m. The Wolves come into town riding a three-game losing streak after falling at Shorter, 69-66 on Thursday night.
