Three Lady Flames scored in double figures as Lee opened its Gulf South Conference schedule with a 63-25 victory over Auburn University at Montgomery Thursday evening in Paul Dana Walker Arena. Lee (6-1, 1-0 GSC) continues GSC play on Saturday with a game against West Georgia at 2 p.m. AUM falls to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
Taylor Boggess led the Lady Flames with a game-high 14 points. The sophomore made 5-of-9 shots, including 4-of-7 from behind the arc, and also grabbed seven rebounds to go with an assist and a blocked shot. Shelby Brown and Erin Walsh tallied 12 points each to pace the scoring. Brown finished one rebound shy of a double-double. Walsh was 4-for-7 from distance and went over 1,500 points in her Lee career. The senior currently sits at 1,506.
Carrie Cheeks was the top rebounder in the game with 10. Cheeks inched a little closer to the 1,000-point mark with five markers. The senior is 13 points shy of the milestone.
The Lady Flames outscored AUM 18-2 in the opening 10 minutes and continued the momentum to a 31-8 halftime advantage. Lee continued to build its lead with a 20-9 margin in the third period and edged the Warhawks, 12-8, in the final period to finalize the 38-point victory.
"AUM didn't shoot it very well," said Lee head coach Marty Rowe. "They had some open looks and we got fortunate. We rebounded really well and didn't allow them to get some easy put backs."
Lee shot nearly 41-percent (24-for-59) from the field and were 12-for-33 (.364) from behind the arc. AUM was 9-of-54 (.167) from the floor and made 2-of-13 (.154) 3-pointers. The Warhawks held a slight advantage at the free throw line where they made 5-of-8 (.625), while the Lady Flames made four trips and converted three.
The Lady Flames won the battle of the boards by 23. Lee recorded 52 rebounds, including 15 offensive boards that they turned into 13 second-chance points. AUM grabbed 29 boards and turned eight offensive rebounds into three second-chance points.
"This team has to continue to work hard, to play together and have great execution," added Rowe. "We didn't execute great because they are a really good defensive team and (AUM head coach) Dan (Davis) knows our stuff really well. They're so solid defensively and then they recover really fast. One more pass was there a lot and we didn't see it early. Once we got going with that we got into a pretty decent flow."
