FLORENCE, Ala. – Taylor Moran and Leigh Beatenbough combined to allow one earned run in 14 innings of work to lead the Lee softball team to a series sweep over No. 21 North Alabama on Sunday afternoon.
On the weekend Moran and Beatenbough shined in the circle allowing just four runs in three games while posting a 0.67 ERA to stun the defending National Champion Lions.
The Lady Flames improve to 17-7 on the year and are now 8-4 and tied for second place in the Gulf South Conference. The Lions, preseason ranked No. 1 in the country, slide to 16-10 and 6-6 in league action.
GAME 1 – LEE 3, UNA 0
Moran shutout the Lions and scattered six hits and the Lady Flames defeated North Alabama, 3-0 in game one. Moran improves 3-1 on the year to go along with four saves and a 1.50 ERA.
Red-shirt freshman Alison Meadows got the start in right field and delivered an RBI single in the second inning to put the Lady Flames on the board.
Lee would add insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Zoe Miller scored after Stevie Baird reached on an error to make it 2-0. In the seventh Beatenbough completed the scoring as she laced a single to right to score Frazier.
Raven Cole (5-4) was tagged with the loss for the Lions in the opener. She allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits over the full seven innings. Cole struck out eight but struggled with command in walking six.
Madison Daniel had two singles and Anna Gayle Norris singled and walked twice to pace the North Alabama offense.
GAME 2 – LEE 4, UNA 3
Brooklyn Frazier drilled a three-run homer in the first inning and Beatenbough earned her second win of the weekend as Lee completed the series sweep with a 4-3 victory over North Alabama in Sunday's nightcap.
Taylor Moran added on in the third frame as she ripped a run-scoring double to make it 4-1 Lady Flames. The freshman finished with three hits.
The Lions made things interesting in the sixth inning as Kennedy Christy was called on to pinch hit with two outs and one on as promptly launched a two run home run to right field. Beatenbough bounced back to get Macy Graves to ground out to end the inning and retired the Lions in order in the seventh to end the game.
Beatenbough improves to 9-4 on the year as she allowed just five hits and one earned run to stifle the high-powered Lions offense for the second straight day.
Hannah Bodenhorn (2-1) lasted just two innings giving up three runs and five hits for the Lions. Marissa Honeycutt was effective in relief as she gave up just one run in five innings while striking out three.
"I'm proud of my staff and how well they crafted a game plan," said a pleased head coach Emily Russell. "The team really worked this week in practice to improve on some things that we struggled with last weekend. They responded all week to the adjustments we asked them to make. Any time you get a GSC sweep its big and to get one on the road is even better."
Up next for the Lady Flames will be trip to North Georgia to square off with the No. 4 Nighthawks on Tuesday. The doubleheader with the Peach Belt Conference powerhouse is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
