MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Lee right-hander Rob Gustitus pitched his club's first complete nine-inning game on Friday afternoon as the Flames opened a three-game series with (Memphis) Christian Brothers University by posting a 6-0 victory.
Gustitus allowed only five hits while striking out 10 and walking three, improving his record to 4-3. The Flames will be right back in action on Saturday afternoon. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 1 p.m. (Eastern) start.
"Rob was in command all the way and gave us what we needed to open this series," commented coach Mark Brew after his club improved to 22-8 overall and moved to 10-15 in GSC play. The Bucs slipped to 12-28, 6-9.
Not only did Lee get an outstanding pitching performance but the defense also posted a clean sheet (no errors). "We made the plays in the field and got some big hits when we needed them," added Brew. The Lee skipper also praised Bucs pitcher Peyton Sanderlin (3-6). "He gave them seven solid innings until we were able to break through in the sixth."
The Flames broke open a scoreless game in the third inning when Jordan Howard singled, took second on a wild pitch and later scored on a sac fly by Drew Johnson. The margin reached 3-0 in the sixth. Nate Wierzgac walked and scored on a ringing double by Johnson. Spencer Mossburg drove home Johnson with a double down the left-field line.
Lee put the contest out of reach in the eighth. Wierzgac, who started rallies all day, singled. Johnson followed with his second hit of the day and Mossburg reached on an error to load the bases. Peyton Meeker ripped a two-base hit that plated two runs.
Christian Brothers' Sanderlin gave up seven hits, three earned runs, struck out eight and walked two. Three other Bucs hurlers followed Sanderlin to the mound with Patrick Gurley surrendering three runs and allowing three hits. Joe Mattson had two hits in the loss and Riley Kilgore tripled accounting for three of CBU's five hits.
