LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Leigh Beatenbough tossed five shutout innings and helped herself at the plate with a home run and three RBI to lead the Lee softball team to a convincing 10-0 series clinching win at West Alabama on Sunday afternoon.
Beatenbough (12-4) allowed just three hits and walked only one to go along with six strikeouts to silence the Tigers bats. The junior right-hander boasts a 2.79 ERA to lead the Lady Flames' pitching staff.
Stevie Baird got Lee on the board with a bases loaded walk in the second inning. From there the Lady Flames put crooked numbers on the board in the next three frames to put away the Tigers after just five innings due to the run-rule.
In third inning Beatenbough delivered a two-run bomb left field. The long ball was just her second extra-base hit of the season for the junior from Canon, Ga.
The game was put out of reach in the fourth frame as the Lady Flames put up five runs. The big blow was a two-run triple from clean-up hitter Brooklynn Frazier. The freshman finished 3 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Andrea Edmonds (14-16) got the nod in the circle for West Alabama for the third straight contest but after pitching every inning in yesterday's doubleheader the ace was chased after 3 1/3 innings. She allowed eight runs, six earned, on five hits. Edmonds punched out seven before giving way to Shaylyn Borowiak for the final 1 2/3 innings.
Pinch-hit specialist Caroline Freiling delivered a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth to make it 9-0 Lee. Frazier would rip her third hit and deliver her third RBI of the game to finish of the scoring one batter later.
The win propels the Lady Flames to 26-11 and 13-8 in the GSC. Lee currently sits in fifth place in the competitive league with 12 league games remaining. The top eight teams qualify for the GSC Tournament.
Lee will travel to No. 17 North Georgia on Wednesday before hosting rival Union University next weekend. The three-game set with the Bulldogs begins Saturday at 2 p.m.
