Lady Flames Settle for Sixth Seed In GSC Tournament

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Lee softball team will settle for the sixth-seed in the Gulf South Conference Tournament after No. 12 West Florida finished off a three-game sweep of the Lady Flames with a commanding 11-0 victory on Sunday afternoon.

The win gives the Argonauts (39-12, 23-9) the No. 2 seed in the GSC Tournament which begins on Thursday. The loss places the young Lady Flames (33-17, 19-13) in the sixth spot. The tournament will be hosted by Alabama Huntsville after they claimed the top spot with a pair of wins yesterday.

West Florida wasted little time jumping on starter Leigh Beatenbough (16-8). The Argonauts chased Beatenbough with just one out in the first after scoring five runs (two earned) on two hits. Hailey Clark tossed three innings in relief and allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits. Sophomore Madyson Stallcup came on to get the final two outs in the bottom of the fourth as West Florida claimed the five-inning run-rule victory.

Becca Taylor tallied her GSC-leading 23rd victory of the season as she pitched 4 1/3 innings of shutout ball. Taylor allowed just four hits and yielded two walks to go along with a pair of strikeouts.

Once again the Lee offense struggled to get anything going off of the Argonauts' ace. The one bright spot was a 2 for 2 day from freshman Brooklynn Frazier. The versatile player, who has spent time at second base, right field and catcher this season, is hitting .314 and has clubbed a team-high eight home runs.

Tiona Hill drove in four runs and finished 2 for 2 with a double and a run scored to lead West Florida at the plate. Rhiannon Sassman added two singles, drove in a pair and scored three runs.

The Lady Flames will open their first GSC Tournament in program history with Mississippi College on Thursday in the very first game of the day at 11 a.m. Lee and the Choctaws split their two regular season meetings.

Coach Emily Russell's ladies end the regular season with an eight-win improvement in both the GSC and their overall record from just one year ago.
