Lee University women's basketball held Delta State University to six second-half points on its way to a 54-27 Gulf South Conference victory Thursday evening in Paul Dana Walker Arena. The Lady Flames (15-3, 8-2 GSC) held a slim 24-21 advantage at the halftime break.
Lee rattled off the first 13 points of the third period before Delta State (6-11, 4-7 GSC) ended its scoring drought on Aliyah Herod's made free throw with 11 seconds remaining. Lindsey Roddy scored a layup as time expired to complete Lee's 15-1 third period score. The Lady Flames continued to build its lead with a 15-5 margin over the final 10 minutes.
"We did a good job adjusting to their defensive pressure," said Lee University assistant coach Jan Spangler. "They (DSU) want to get you into the grind-it-out type of game and we fell into that in the first half and it took us a little while to get going."
Abby Bertram was the only Lee player to reach double digits in scoring. The sophomore finished with 15 points to go with nine rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Shelby Brown and Roddy tallied seven markers each. With tonight's performance, Brown pulled to within eight points of reaching the 1,000-point milestone. She was also second on the team in rebounding with seven boards.
Delta State was led by Takisha Jordan's 14 points and seven rebounds. Raven Johnson also pulled down seven rebounds and added four points in the loss.
After a slow start, the Lady Flames finished the game 18-for-53 (.340) from the field and 7-for-29 (.241) from behind the arc. The Lady Statesmen were 11-for-51 (.216) from the field, including 2-for-21 (.095) in the second half. The visitors were 0-of-13 from long distance and 5-for-10 from the free throw line. Lee made 15 trips to the charity stripe and converted 11 (.733).
Lee won the battle of the boards 41-34 and tallied nine offensive boards to six for DSU. The Lady Flames cashed their offensive rebounds in for seven points, while DSU scored four second-chance points.
Delta State turned the ball over 16 times and the Lady Flames amassed 17 points off turnovers. Delta State scored seven points off Lee's 15 floor mistakes.
"We need to clean some stuff up and learn from it. We'll watch it on film and then move on to get ready for Mississippi College," added Spangler.
The Lady Flames hope to extend their six-game win streak as they play host to the Lady Choctaws Saturday afternoon. The GSC contest is slated for a 2 p.m. tip.
