CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Lee University men's tennis dropped an exhibition match to The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, 7-0, Friday evening at The McCallie School's Strang-Voges Tennis Center. While the match did not count against the Flames' record, the Mocs counted it and evened their record at 1-1.
The match was played under Division I rules, so the doubles matches did not directly lead to a team point. A team point is awarded to whichever team wins at least two of the three doubles matches.
UTC drew first blood with a 6-2 win by Pablo Llebeili and Luke Plaisted over Daniel Prata and Igor Schattan at No. 3 doubles. The Flames evened the doubles competition with a win in the No. 2 spot. Boyd Blackburn and Jake Okines defeated Jacob Marshall and Cooper Long, 6-2, to set up a winner-take-all situation for the doubles point.
Niklas Gerdes and Simon Bustamante combined to beat Rhys Milne and Bruno Medeiros, 6-2, to give the Mocs the doubles point and a 1-0 team lead.
The Mocs swept the singles matches to complete the 7-0 non-conference win. Llebeili was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Medeiros at No. 3 singles and Gerdes beat Milne, 6-1 and 6-2.
Bustamante held off Okines, 6-2 and 6-4, at the No. 2 spot to secure the fourth team point and the team victory. Plaisted and Marshall lost three games each to Prata and Schattan, respectively. Jordan Knott battled at No. 6 singles before falling to Long, 6-3 and 6-4.
The Flames open their regular season on Feb. 2 with a trip to Due West, S.C., to face Erskine College. The non-conference match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
