In a night that always means so much more the Lee volleyball team swept Kentucky State 25-19, 25-16, 25-17 in the annual Volley For A Cure match from a packed out Walker Arena.
Â
"I think this night is very special for the players and for our program. The reason for the event and the big crowd carries us because we are playing for more than just a win on the court," said head coach Andrea Hudson. "The highlight of the night is giving the scholarships to a well deserving student and their family and tonight we certainly accomplished that goal with Vincent Vaughn.
Â
Prior to the match the Lady Flames honored their six seniors, MaKayla Beebe, Emily Bento, Collin Bowen, Claire McMasters, Alex Reuter, and Silvia Sartori in a special ceremony.
Â
Beebe and Sartori each recorded significant milestones in tonight's match. Beebe recorded her 1,800
th career dig while Sartori slammed home her 1,500
th career kill in the first set.
Â
When asked about her storied career Beebe noted, "I definitely had the goals and the mindset for it but you know it's been the teams that I've gotten to play with here and the coaches who have helped me get to here."
Â
Sartori finished the match with 17 kills while Beebe led the Lady Flame defense with 12 digs. Hanna Matthews recorded 34 assists to lead all athletes in the category.
Â
Lee opened the match with an Allie Koepfer ace as they jumped out to a 7-2 lead. The Lady Flames maintained the lead all the way through winning set one, 25-19.
Â
Set two Lee opened a 14-9 lead and pounced on the opportunity stretching it to 19-13 before a Koepfer and Reuter block put set two away, 25-16.
Â
The third set looked to be a run away as the hosts jumped out to a 9-2 advantage and never looked back. Fittingly, McMasters, a senior from Chattanooga slammed it home to take set three 25-17 and the match 3-0.
Â
Arlandria Greathouse led the Thorobreds with 11 kills. Amanda Moore recorded 27 assists while Alliyah Williams recorded 12 digs on the night.
Â
Lee improves to 15-13 on the year as Kentucky State fell to 19-20.
The highlight of the night took place in between sets two and three as Vincent Vaughn, senior class president at Bradley Central High School, was awarded the annual Volley For A Cure Scholarship. Vincent's mother Greta was diagnosed with Stage Three Breast Cancer in 2015 and he supported and cared for her every step of the way through surgery and recovery and chemo treatments. Vincent will graduate in May and is planning on attending Lee University in the fall.
Â
The Lady Flames will return to Walker Arena for their last home match of the 2018 season on Tuesday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. as they take on Montevallo in a key Gulf South Conference match.
