No. 4 Argos Outbattle Lady Flames

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Fourth-ranked and unbeaten West Florida got a goal from Sam Waarum, Grace Busby assisted, at the 22:39 mark in the first half and then turned back a valiant effort by the Lee women on Friday evening in a 1-0 win at the West Florida Soccer Complex.

"Although the result didn't go our way this evening, I am extremely proud of the effort the team put in during the second half," commented Lee head coach Chris Hennessey. "Now we prepare for Sunday and make sure we put forth the same effort we did this evening."

The Argonauts improved to 11-0 overall and 7-0 in GSC play. The Lady Flames suffered their second straight defeat and dropped to 6-4-1 and 3-3. They will move on over to Mobile on Sunday afternoon and face Spring Hill College in a contest slated for 2 p.m.

Lee had a couple of solid attempts to tie the hard-fought battle in the first half. Mia Hollingsworth's shot was blocked by Argo keeper Esthefanny Barreras and a later attempt by Devin Healy bounced off the crossbar.

The Lady Flames appeared to be a fresher squad in the second half and had two near misses. Hollingsworth had her shot blocked by Barreras again, while Riley Engels' shot just missed with the West Florida keeper pulled out of the box.

Taylor Green registered seven saves in taking the loss. She was aided by the improved effort of the Lee backline, sparked by the play of Anna Lanter. Argo keeper Barreras recorded four saves in picking up the win. The Lady Flames attempted 12 shots and placed four on target. West Florida, well below its season average, attempted 16 shots and had eight on frame. Lee had four corner kicks and the Argos eight.
