PENSACOLA, Fla. – In a battle of two of the top teams in the Gulf South Conference the Lee men's soccer team settled for a 0-0 draw in a physical battle at West Florida on Friday evening.
Â
The two teams remain unbeaten in league play with the Flames moving to 7-2-2 on the year and 5-0-1 in the conference while the Argonauts are 6-2-2 and 4-0-1.
Â
Lee junior keeper Daniel Hrenko registered a career-high 16 saves while facing an onslaught of 21 total shots from the home team. West Florida's Jacob Murray also kept a clean sheet with three saves.
Â
"We always go into every game wanting to win so to play 110 minutes and only get a draw certainly stings a little bit," said head coach Derek Potteiger." West Florida is a good team so to come on the road and come out of here with a point is a good result. "I'm proud of the effort the guys put into night. I thought we were sharp in the first half and the overtimes but I thought our legs got the best of us in the second half."
Â
There was not much smiling and pleasantries exchanged on the pitch as the two clubs combined for six cards and two red cards (one on each side). The ejections took place after an aggressive play from a West Florida defender upended Lee's Samir Williams causing a scuffle on the field.
Â
Cooler tempers prevailed however and the teams resumed battling it out on the field. The Flames posted 10 shots and three on frame led by three from Craig Quinn and Palle Jespersen.
Â
Lee will look to get back into the win column and remain unbeaten in GSC play as it heads just West to Mobile, Ala. to visit Spring Hill College on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
