SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Lee University Women's Basketball team outscored host Saint Leo University by 17 in the third period on its way to a 71-50 win Saturday afternoon. The Lady Flames split the two contests in the GSC/SSC Challenge to begin the season with a 1-1 record.
Lee was led offensively by Abby Bertram and Haley Schubert. Bertram made 4-of-9 3-point attempts on her way to 16 points. Schubert was 6-for-8 from the floor, including 2-for-3 from distance, to record 16 markers. Bertram added four rebounds and two blocked shots, while Schubert led the team with five steals.
Taylor Boggess made three 3-pointer to finish with nine points. Lindsey Roddy supplied eight points and five assists. Nicky Widenski and Becca Cheeks tallied seven points each. Cheeks led the Lady Flames with eight rebounds, five of which were on the offensive end of the court.
Saint Leo (1-1) put one player in double-figure scoring with Alani Gallagher recording 14 points to go along with five rebounds. Casey Wortley and Delaney Bernard each had nine points. Wortley grabbed a team-high seven boards.
The Lady Flames held a slim 30-27 advantage at the halftime break before outscoring the Lions 24-7 in the third period and leading by 20 points with 10 minutes remaining.
Lee scorched the nets at a 45.8-percent clip as they made 27-of-59 attempts from the field and were 12-for-27 (.444) from behind the arc. Saint Leo was 13-for-37 (.351) overall and made just 4-of-12 (.333) from distance.
For the second consecutive day, the Lady Flames' opponent registered more trips to the free throw line than Lee did. The Lady Flames converted 5-of-7 (.714) charity tosses, while the Lions toed the line 29 times, making 20 (.690).
The Lady Flames scored 29 points off of Saint Leo's 21 turnovers. Lee was guilty of 14 floor mistakes and the Lions cashed them in for 11 points.
Lee returns to Paul Dana Walker Arena on Wednesday for their regular season home opener. The Lady Flames face Cumberland University at 6 p.m.
