JACKSON, Tenn. – Keeping its chances for a two-seed alive in next week's Gulf South Conference Tournament the Lee volleyball team defeated Union University 3-1 (25-13, 25-19, 19-25, 25-14) on Friday night to earn its fifth straight victory.
For the second straight game Silvia Sartori and Bailey Kress recorded double-doubles. Sartori hammered home 18 kills to go along with 14 digs while Kress slammed 12 attacks and 17 digs.
MaKayla Beebe matched Kress with 17 digs and Hanna Matthews led all athletes 40 assists.
The Lady Flames made quick work of the Bulldogs in both sets one and two. Lee hit .371 in the opening frame committing only three errors as they rolled to a 25-13 victory.
In set two it was more dominance from the red hot Lady Flames as the hit .361 with 16 kills and only three errors. Lee jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead and maintained the advantage throughout the set as Sartori slammed home the final point to win the set 25-19.
In set three Union took advantage of several miscues from the Lady Flames. Lee hit just .091 as Union hit above their average at .205. The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-1 lead thanks to three Lee errors. The hosts extended their lead off a 4-1 run to 12-6 and eventually closed things out at 25-19 to avoid the sweep.
The fourth set saw Lee get back to their efficient ways committing only two errors while delivering 10 attacks on 30 attempts. It looked as though Union might force a deciding set jumping out to a 4-0 lead to start the frame. Coach Hudson's squad responded with a 9-1 run to take a 9-5 lead. Lee would slowly stretch the lead and took it to 20-12 before wrapping up the match on a 4-0 run.
Union was paced Meghan Delaney and Delaney Peterson with nine kills, followed closely by Christa Karns with eight. Rebecca Sexton recorded 23 assists as Abbie Rahn dug 22 Lady Flame attacks.
The Lady Flames (17-13, 12-3 GSC) continue their road trip traveling to Christian Brothers tomorrow to wrap up the regular season at 5:30 p.m. Union falls to 7-25 and 3-12 in league play.
Coach Hudson and her squad will travel to Pensacola, Fla. for the GSC tournament beginning next Friday. Lee is currently in line for the three seed but could move into the second slot with some help. With a win tomorrow and a West Georgia upset of West Alabama the Lady Flames can clinch the two seed and get an all-important bye into the semifinals along with top-seeded West Florida.
