Warhawks No Match for Lady Flames

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lee University women's basketball team opened GSC play with a convincing 63-31 victory over host Auburn Montgomery on Thursday evening. The Lady Flames improved to 5-1 overall and will continue their road adventures against rival Shorter University on Saturday evening at 2 p.m.

Lee jumped out to a 25-13 margin at the end of the first half and outscored AUM 36-18 in the second 20 minutes. They also outscored the Warhawks 29-9 in points off the bench.

Freshman Haley Schubert paced the balanced Lee scoring with 12 points and also dished off a team-leading four assists. Abby Bertram followed with 11 and Taylor Boggess finished with 10. Again Coach Marty Rowe was able to clear his bench and 12 of the 15 players he inserted got into the scoring act.

"We were a little rusty in the first half after being off since last Tuesday," remarked Rowe. "However, our girls played much better in the second half. I like the attitude and intensity we played with tonight. We've got to keep it going at Shorter. For some reason it's never been an easy place for our girls to play."

While Schubert, Bertram and Boggess were scoring in double figures, Lindsey Roddy and Kayla Tillie tossed in seven markers apiece. After shooting just 24 percent in the first half, the Lady Flames bounced back with 41 percent shooting in the second stanza.

Lee out-rebounded the Warhawks 44-34. Becca Cheeks claimed seven boards while Tori Lentz and Nicky Widenski pulled down four apiece. The Lady Flames held AUM to 24 percent shooting for the game and just 11 percent from behind the arc
