Volleyball Opens GSC Tourney with UAH

Senior middle blocker Alex Reuter and the Lady Flames begin postseason play tonight at 7:30 against UAH.


PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Lee volleyball team takes on Alabama Huntsville tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament, hosted by West Florida
 
Lee comes into the match 18-13 overall and finished up GSC play at 13-3 to secure the three seed in the tournament. Coach Hudson's squad has won the last six games and eight out of the last ten to wrap up the regular season.
 
Last Time Out
The Lady Flames defeated Christian Brothers in four sets (25-22, 18-25, 25-19, 25-23) on Saturday evening to close out the regular season on a six match winning streak. Bailey Kress paced the Lee offense with 20 kills while Hanna Matthews recorded 44 assists. Silvia Sartori and MaKayla Beebe paced the defense with 20 digs each.
 
The Series
UAH holds a slight edge in the all-time series at 22-18. The last time the two teams faced Lee swept the Chargers (28-26, 25-21, 25-19) in Walker Arena. Silvia Sartori posted 21 kills while Hanna Matthews had 45 assists on the night. Allie Koepfer led Lee with 24 digs.
 
Sartori Named Player of the Year
Silvia Sartori was voted the GSC player of the year the conference office announced on Tuesday. The Serbia native has amassed 499 kills on the year to place sixth in the nation in total digs. Sartori is eighth in kills per set (4.46). The senior outside hitter has dug 394 balls and 34 total blocks. Sartori was also voted first team All-GSC.
 
Beebe Named Libero of the Year
MaKayla Beebe was voted the GSC libero of the year the conference office announced on Tuesday. The senior libero has recorded 604 digs to lead the conference in total digs while ranking 23rd in the nation in digs per set (5.81). The Aurora, Ill. native is second on the team in aces at 27 and has recorded 85 assists on the year. Beebe was also voted first team All-GSC.
 
Matthews Voted to Second Team All-GSC
Hanna Matthews was voted to the All-GSC Second Team.  The junior setter has recorded 1,124 assists on the year. Matthews, a native of Ooltewah, Tenn., has hit 17 service aces while slamming home 63 kills to go along with 280 digs and 53 total blocks.
 
The Charger File
Alabama Huntsville comes into the match 22-10 overall but 10-6 in the Gulf South Conference. UAH has won three of their last five matches but fell to Montevallo in their regular season finale, and to the Lady Flames on Oct. 23.
 
Isabelle Barnes leads the Chargers with 280 kills on the season while Sabrina Duncan has recorded 986 assists on the year. Duncan also paces the team serving up 39 aces.
 
Haley Hop has been a force on defense digging 559 opponent's attacks. Barnes has also been an attack stopper with 126 blocks.
