NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman Haley Schubert scored 18 points to lead the Lee women's basketball team to a 74-61 victory over Trevecca Nazarene University on New Year's Eve from Music City.
Schubert has won the GSC Freshman of the Week award on four separate occasions this season and sets herself up nicely for this week with two more games coming up on Thursday and Saturday.
The Lady Flames improve to 9-3 overall while the Trojans fall to 3-8.
After a slow start, falling behind 13-9 after the first quarter, the Lady Flames shook off the Christmas Break rust and took a 32-26 lead at the half after a 23-13 second quarter.
"It's a good solid win coming off break. We got started slowly on both ends but give our team credit for hanging and really grinding things out," said Lee head coach Marty Rowe.
Abby Bertram added 14 points, going 4 of 5 from 3-point distance. Junior Nicky Widenski poured in 14 points to go along with five rebounds in 24 minutes of action. Anna Woodford came off the bench to spark the Lady Flames with nine points.
Lee finished at 48 percent from the field and 40 percent (10 of 25) from beyond the arc. The Lady Flames defense limited the home team to just 36 percent shooting from the field and 18.2 percent from 3-point land.
"Trevecca certainly deserves credit for playing exceptionally hard and making things difficult for us," added Rowe. "We'll look forward to getting our group ready for Union on Thursday. (It's) always a great challenge when we get a chance to play them."
Adi Hale led the Trojans with a double-double performance of 18 points and 10 rebounds. McKenzie Kilburn registered 16 points and five rebounds.
The Lady Flames will get back right back to work on Thursday as they travel to Jackson to take on rival and No. 1 Union University at 6:30 p.m. EST. The road trip concludes on Saturday with a matinee against Christian Brothers. Coach Rowe's squad returns home for the first time in 2019 on Jan. 10 against West Georgia at 6 p.m.
