The Lee University women's basketball team clinched a berth to the 2018 Gulf South Conference Championships with a 60-47 defeat of Christian Brothers University Saturday afternoon at Paul Dana Walker Arena. The Lady Flames (19-6, 12-5 GSC) remain in a third-place tie with Valdosta State University.
The Lady Flames placed four players in double figures in scoring. Erin Walsh made four 3-pointers on her way to a team-leading 14 points. She also led the team with eight rebounds. Lindsey Roddy added 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. Maddie Long and Shelby Brown rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points each. Long dished out five assists and Brown recorded two blocked shots.
Tori Lentz came off the bench to grab six big rebounds to go along with an assist and steal. Carrie Cheeks tallied six points and two rebounds in limited time due to early foul trouble.
The Lady Flames trailed 28-19 heading into the halftime break, but outscored the visitors 16-5 in the third period to take a 35-33 lead with 10 minutes left to play. Lee added to its lead with a 25-14 score in the fourth period to supply the final 13 point margin.
"We talked to the team that we needed to come out and play better," said Walsh. "We had to get more stops and play better offense. In the second half we played better defense and played as a team on offense. That really helped us."
Lee finished 21-for-56 (.375) from the field after making just 7-of-29 (.241) attempts in the first half. From behind the arc, the Lady Flames were 1-of-13 (.077) in the first half and finished 10-for-26 (.385).
Christian Brothers (9-14, 8-9 GSC) made 16-of-58 (.276) from the field and were 6-for-25 (.240) from behind the arc. Neither team gained much of an advantage at the free throw line. Lee was 8-for-14 (.571), while the Lady Bucs were 9-for-15 (.600).
The five senior members of the Lady Flames team were honored between the conclusion of the women's game and the start of the men's. Those recognized for their playing careers were: Walsh, Cheeks, Brown, Haley Cornellison and Jasmine Hill.
"Four of them have been here for the transition (from NAIA to NCAA DII) and so, when we were unable to play postseason for a year when they got here, to get them to trust us on coming in and being a part of that has been huge for us," said Lee head coach Marty Rowe. "We've progressively gotten better every year. I'm proud of them. They're great people and great students on and off the court and have been really good ambassadors for our program."
The Lady Flames wrap up the home portion of the regular season schedule on Wednesday against The University of Alabama in Huntsville. The GSC contest is scheduled to tip at 6 p.m.
