Penney Goes the Distance In Tough-luck Loss

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In the final game of the Gulf South Conference Opening Weekend Festival the Lee Softball team dropped a pitcher's duel, 1-0 to the University of Montevallo on Sunday afternoon.

The lone run of the game came in the fourth inning as Shelby Lowery delivered a two-out triple to center to score Mariel Bertossi. The Falcons capitalized on a Lee error which extended the frame allowing Lowery to deliver the decisive run.

The Lee offense was held in check by four different Montevallo pitchers. Alexis Bonanno (3-1) started a worked the first three innings allowing just two hits while striking out two.

Brooke Ingram pitched a scoreless frame while Mychael McMilan worked around two hits and walk to keep the Lady Flames off the board in her 1.1 innings. Jessica Boyd came on in the seventh to slam the door for the save.

Abby McKinney and Bailey Church were the only Lee players to record hits in the contest. Each player singled twice.
