Lady Flames Blast Barry Bucs, 8-0

Look Forward To Home Opener On Wednesday

GULF SHORES, Ala. – After showing signs of struggle for the previous three games of the Gulf Coast Invitational, the Lee University softball team took out their frustrations on Barry University with an 8-0, five-inning, defeat to finish the weekend on a positive note.

The Lady Flames (2-3) tallied a season-high 10 hits and took advantage of two Barry (1-4) errors to post four runs in the second inning, two in the fourth and two more in the fifth to put the run rule into effect.

Brooklynn Frazier, Zoe Miller and Bailey Church each doubled on their ways to two safeties a piece. Kayla Louie legged out a triple on a shot just inside the first base bag. Stevie Baird, Taylor Moran and Lily Hatcher rounded out the Lee offense with one single each. Frazier led the team with three RBI, while Baird and Louie knocked in two runs.

"Today was the first glimpse of who we think our team is and what we think we can do," said Lee head coach Emily Russell. "We finally hit the ball in a game situation like we do in practice."

???????Lynsey Duncan had two of Barry's four singles. Anielese Palmeiro and Kristina Osorio claimed the other two.

Lee got the offense going in the second inning with a one-out double by Miller. Claudia Jones reached when her sacrifice bunt was misplayed to allow Miller to score. With two out, Church singled up the middle to put runners at first and second. Hatcher reached on a bunt to load the bases and Baird singled up the middle to push the Lee lead to 2-0. Frazier followed with a two-run single to run the inning total to four runs.

Baird and Frazier combined to pad the Lee advantage with two more runs in the fourth inning. Baird plated a run with a sacrifice fly and Frazier doubled to score Bailey Church.

The Lady Flames garnered back-to-back singles by Moran and Miller to begin the fifth inning. Following a strikeout and a wild pitch that moved pinch runner Kayla Gooch to third and Miller to second, Louie invoked the run rule with a bases-clearing triple.

???????Shonna Penney (1-1) recorded the complete-game shutout in her second start of the season. Penney scattered four hits, walked one and struck out four.

"I think this was a good weekend to play some good competition and see strong pitchers. I feel like we made progress and I expect us to play better from here on out," added Russell.

The Lady Flames are scheduled to host Lincoln Memorial University for the team's home opener at Butler Field on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
