Thanks to a six-run fifth inning the Lee softball team topped visiting King University, 6-2 on a cool Tuesday afternoon at Butler Field to earn a doubleheader split.
Taylor Moran capped off the six-run flurry with a two-run homer to right field. Prior to the Moran long ball Brooklynn Frazier ripped a two-run single back up the box to give the Lady Flames a 4-2 advantage. The first two runs were scored via an error and a Kayla Louie groundout.
Junior Erika Greek (2-2) pitched six-plus innings and allowed just six hits and two runs to go along with seven strikeouts. Greek allowed a pair of runs to score in the first inning before throwing five scoreless innings. Leigh Beatenbough came in the seventh to get the final three outs.
Emma Hughes (2-5) was tagged with the loss for King. She gave up all six runs but none of those runs were earned.
Kayla Gooch and Lily Hatcher each tallied two singles for the Lady Flames. Zoe Miller singled and scored and in the big fifth inning.
The split moves the Lady Flames to 13-14 while King goes to 9-11 on the season.
Lee will jump back into Gulf South Conference play as they travel to Jackson, Tenn. to take on Union on Saturday and Sunday.
GAME ONE - LEE 4 KING 6
Despite a solid outing from Beatenbough in the circle the Lady Flames dropped game one to the Tornado, 6-4 in a 10-inning battle.
With the Lady Flames down to their final strike Brooklynn Frazier launched a solo home run to center to tie things up at four in the bottom of the seventh.
Neither team was able to breakthrough until the Tornado put two runs on the board in the top of the 10
th and held Lee scoreless to claim the 6-4 victory in game one.
Leslie Odom (4-3) grinded out all 10 innings in the circle for King. Odom allowed just five hits, walked five and struck out nine. She gave up four runs but only one was earned.
Beatenbough settled in after giving up a two-run first inning homer to Kay Brokering and allowed just two hits and struck out seven in five innings.
Shonna Penney (5-6) suffered the loss as she allowed single runs in the sixth and seventh before giving up two in the 10
th.
Moran gave the Lady Flames the 3-2 lead in the third as she singled up two runs.
Brokering struck again in the 10 inning as she doubled to right-center to score Katelyn Davidson who gave King a 5-4 advantage when she reached on a fielder's choice.
