It was a tale of two games in Friday's Gulf South Conference doubleheader between the Lee softball team and Auburn Montgomery from Butler Field.
The Lady Flames took the opener 6-4 over the Warhawks behind the bat of Taylor Moran and the arm of Leigh Beatenbough.
The nightcap was all AUM as it strung together back to back three-run innings en route to a 7-0 shutout of Lee.
The split moves the Lady Flames to 17-17 and 7-10 in the GSC. The Warhawks now sit at 15-10 overall and 8-9 in league action.
The two teams will wrap up the series on Saturday at noon.
GAME 1 – LEE 6 AUM 4
Moran homered and drove in three runs and Beatenbough spun another solid outing in the circle to lead the Lady Flames to a 6-4 victory over Auburn Montgomery in game one.
Beatenbough improved to 7-6 on the year as she tossed 6.1 innings allowing four runs on seven hits. The senior struck out nine in the contest.
Moran singled home a run in the fifth inning to jump start a three-run rally. Abby McKinney followed with a two-run single up the box to extend the lead to 4-1.
The sizzling bat of Moran would spark Lee again in the sixth inning as she put the game out of reach with a two-run blast to center in the sixth inning. The sophomore is hitting .478 and is eighth in the nation in hits and RBI, 10
th in on-base percentage and 14
th in total bases.
The Warhawks would make things interesting with a three-run seventh inning. Clinging to a two-run lead the Lady Flames called on freshman Shonna Penney to shut the door and record the final two outs to earn her first career save.
Natalie Johnsey (2-5) started and worked four innings in the circle for Auburn Montgomery. Johnsey allowed three hits and four runs while struggling with command giving up seven walks.
GAME 2 – LEE 0 AUM 7
The Warhawks bounced back to blank the Lady Flames, 7-0 in Friday's second game.
Chanel Newcomer kept Lee off-balance as she shined in the circle throwing a complete game shutout. Newcomer allowed just four hits and struck out three to earn her eighth win of the season.
Kalee Sparks certainly provided a spark for the Warhawks as she went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBI. Michaelyn Foster also tallied three hits with two doubles and drove in a run. Gracie Harris added two hits and scored twice, Jaycie Walkre doubled and singled and Morgan Duschell also had two hits to round out the 14-hit attack.
Penney (7-7) lasted 3.1 innings and allowed six runs on eight hits to go along with five strikeouts. Erika Greek pitched the final 3.2 innings and gave up one run on six hits.
The Lady Flames managed just four singles in the contest. Baird, Hatcher, Church and Louie tallied hits while Moran walked twice.
