Young Harris Smothers Lady Flames, 19-3

Young Harris College proved why they are the top squad in the Gulf South Conference as they topped the Lee lacrosse team, 19-3 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Mountain Lions (7-5, 5-0 GSC) jumped out to a 10-0 lead just over nine minutes into the game to and never looked back.

The Lady Flames finally got into the score column with a Hannah Rotello goal with 10:03 left in the half.

Coach Wadley's squad scored the last goal in the half as Madeline Perrigo hit the net with 3:23 left in the first to send the Lady Flames down 12-2 at the half.

The Mountain Lions jumped on Lee early in the second half extending their lead 14-2 before Becca Broadwick scored her team leading 44th goal of the year to try and hinder the Young Harris defensive effort to cut the lead 14-3. Young Harris would go on a 5-0 run to end the game and make the final 19-3.

Young Harris was paced by Hayley Bartlett who scored four goals. Maddie Peek, and Kendra Parenteau each recorded a hat trick. Rachel Lepine, Leigh Anne Turner, and Erika Cross wrapped up the multiple goal scorers for the Mountain Lions. Kelsey Dover, Nicole Kernohan, and Meghan Tonnesen also scored in the contest.

Freshman Christa Hill got the start and loss in goal. Hill saw 39 shots, allowed 19, and stopped 13.

"The game should have been a little more even than it was. We didn't come out very strong today. We had a lot of unforced errors that hurt us," said Head Coach Addie Wadley

Young Harris had a complete defensive effort allowing Lee to only get seven shots off, five on goal. Julia Darroch earned the win in goal and had two saves. Lee was guilty of 29 turnovers, 16 were caused by the Georgia club.

"Hopefully we can use this as a wake-up call. Like 'Hey! Let's fight for the rest of this season.' Up to this point we have played a good season and the girls have really done a great job. It's hard this time of year, so hopefully this will be a wake-up call, let's finish it," said Wadley of the tough loss.

"This is our second year. They turned it around. We still have a winning record still at 7-6. I think everybody wants to finish it above .500 or at .500. I think if we can figure this out we still can. We are going to fight hard for it and turn it around," Wadley concluded.

The Lady Flames look to rebound as they travel to take on the University of the Cumberlands on Apr. 5 at 7 p.m. Lee returns home for their last non-conference game of the year against Truett-McConnell on Apr. 7 at 1 p.m.
