The Lee University men's tennis team was edged 5-4 by University of Montevallo Wednesday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Flames dropped to 10-7 overall and 4-6 in the Gulf South Conference, while Montevallo, ranked ninth in the South Region, improved to 14-5 (6-4 GSC).
"We played great all day," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "I have no complaints with our effort. The guys fought real hard and left it all out there today. That's all I can really ask for."Â
Rhys Milne and Jakes Okines recorded an 8-3 win over Daniel Del Val and Sergi Martinez to give Lee an early 1-0 lead. Bruno Medeiros and Jordan Knott extended the lead with an 8-4 margin against Georg Trompler and Brecht Buggenhout.
Petter Dahlin and James Bloomer outlasted Daniel Prata and Igor Schattan to avoid the doubles sweep and cut the Lee lead in half.
Trompler evened the score at 2-2 with a straight-set win at No. 2 singles and Jan Fraederich put the visitors in front by downing Schattan in three sets.
Milne upset Dahlin at No. 1 singles to equalize the team score at 3-3 with three singles matches to be decided. Milne posted two 7-5 tie-breaker scores to post the win over Dahlin, ranked No. 35 in NCAA Division II.
The Falcons claimed the next two matches at the fourth and sixth positions to secure the team victory. Prata overcame a 6-2 loss to David Tanguy in their opening set with a 6-4 mark in the second and a 7-5 tie-breaker score to win at No. 5 singles.
The Flames return to action Friday afternoon against Auburn University at Montgomery for their final regular season match. The GSC contest is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start.
