Lady Flames Sweep Hawks, Remain Perfect in GSC

ROME, Ga. – Paced by 12 kills and a sizzling .706 attack percentage from senior Alex Reuter the Lee volleyball team made it three straight wins to begin Gulf South Conference play with a 3-0 sweep of the Shorter Hawks.

The Lady Flames cruised to a 25-18 first set victory before outlasting the Hawks, 26-24 in set two. Lee jumped out to a 15-9 advantage in the third set and rolled to a 25-18 win to complete the sweep. Mary Katherine Givhan ended the match with her fifth kill of the evening.

Silvia Sartori had 10 slams and seven digs for the Lady Flames but saw her streak of eight straight double-doubles come to an end. Hanna Matthews put the hitters in position to score with 31 assists.

"It felt really good to get a win in the Shorter gym again. It felt like it had been awhile. The girls played very focused tonight and stayed composed with a very loud crowd cheering," said head coach Andrea Hudson. "Each player had a moment to shine so the whole team contributed."

The Lady Flames snapped a six match losing streak in Rome and improved to 23-11 overall in the rivalry with the Hawks. The last time Lee claimed victory at Shorter was Oct. 18, 2011.

Defensively coach Hudson's squad was led by MaKayla Beebe with 12 digs while Reuter added three blocks from the middle.

Dani Melton led the home team with eight kills. Paris Buckner and Alicia McClellan each added five slams. Tinsley Fain set things up with 13 assists.

The Lady Flames improve to a perfect 3-0 in the GSC and are now 5-8 overall. Shorter dips to 1-2 in league play and 4-6 on the season.

Lee will continue its three-match road swing as it heads down to Alabama Huntsville on Friday a 7 p.m. first serve before wrapping up the trip at Montevallo on Saturday at 3 p.m.
