Lady Flames Stretch Winning Streak to Five

The Lee women's basketball team continued their winning ways in Walker Arena on Thursday evening in defeating visiting West Georgia, 66-49.

The Lady Flames winning streak stands at five and they improved to 12-3 overall and more importantly 6-1 as they continue to lead Gulf South Conference play. The Wolves dropped to 9-4 and 4-3.

The Lady Flames will seek to keep the winning streak alive on Saturday afternoon when they host Alabama Huntsville. The tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Walker Arena.

After a slow start, Lee led from start to finish holding a 10-8 margin at the end of the first quarter then improved to 32-23 at halftime. The margin grew in the third quarter to 55-38 at the third stop.

"Overall, I was pleased with our club," stated head coach Marty Rowe after the victory. "West Georgia is always a well-coached team and they always come at you with a group of athletes."

Rowe praised the overall effort of junior Abby Bertram who finished with 10 points, seven assists and seven rebounds. "Abby is taking a leadership role on this club and you can see her getting our team in position to put points on the board."

One of those players was Nicky Widenski who knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and grabbed five rebounds. "Nicky can step out and shoot the three-ball," pointed out the Lee coach. The junior post player led the Lady Flames in scoring with 16 points.

Kayla Tillie continued her fine play with 13 points while Haley Schubert tallied nine and Becca Cheeks pitched in with seven points and garnered six rebounds as the Lady Flames had 36 boards compared to 37 for the Wolves.

Jessica Brown poured in 14 points and finished with a double-double, while pulling down 11 rebounds for the Wolves. Edley Drawhorn totaled nine points and seven rebounds while Ashley Lee came off the bench to score seven.

The Lady Flames were solid from the field (23-of-51) 45 percent. They converted 9-of-18 shots from beyond the arc and went to the line 16 times and canned 11.

The defense, which coach Rowe is very proud of, held the Wolves to 30 percent shooting from the field and just 13 percent from 3-point range. West Georgia only converted 13-of-22 free throws.
