Flames Engulf Falcons, 65-55

The Lee men's basketball team got back on the winning track with a 65-55 victory over Montevallo on Thursday evening from Walker Arena.

Senior guard Cody Jones hit back to back 3's with just under three minutes to play to extend a 3-point lead to nine for the Flames.

The sprinkles on the ice cream came when Michael McGuirk tossed a lob to Ryan Montgomery who flushed it home with two hands to seal the GSC victory and end a brief two-game skid.

With the win the Flames improve to 10-7 and are now 7-2 in the GSC. The loss drops the Falcons to 7-11 and 3-5 in league play.

"I thought we executed well down the stretch to close out the half and the game and played with great energy throughout even when shots weren't falling," said head coach Bubba Smith. "We got some good looks in the first half that didn't go but we played with great intensity and focus on the defensive end to keep ourselves in it. You expect seniors and veteran players to step up in big moments and we saw that tonight. Cody got in foul trouble early but he came back and hit a couple of big shots for us and we continued to play through Colton and were able to find him for good looks inside."

Blevins ended with a team-high 24 points while McGuirk tallied 13 and had nine rebounds. Jones joined them in double-figures with his late barrage from beyond the arc and to finish with 10.

After a sluggish start to the first half the Flames ended with a bang as Quay Kennedy electrified the home crowd with an emphatic put back dunk with two minutes left and Michael McGurik drilled a 3-pointer from the corner at the buzzer to give Lee a 24-17 advantage at the half.

The Lee defense kept the Flames in it while the offense got on track allowing just four points over the first eight minutes of the half. For the half Lee limited Montevallo to just 24 percent (6 of 25) shooting.

The second half was more of the same as Lee showcased why it ranks second in the conference in points allowed (64.8). The Alabama club shot just 33.9 percent in the game and were only 4 of 19 from the 3-point line.

The Flames connected on 23 of 52 (44.2 percent) from the field but got things going in the second half hitting 13 of 25 (52 percent) and drilling 4 of 6 (66.7 percent) from 3-point range.

Micah Fuller led the Falcons with 15 points while Jeremiah Curtis had 11 and six rebounds and Wade Lowman tallied 10.

"This game was won on Monday and Tuesday in practice," noted Smith. "Our guys made a commitment to get after in practice and put last week behind us and it showed on the court tonight."

The two teams posted nearly identical numbers on the glass with Lee collecting 35 and Montevallo hauling in 34. Both clubs were guilty of 13 floor mistakes.

The Flames will wrap up a four-game home stand on Saturday afternoon as they play host to West Alabama at 4 p.m.
