Lady Flames Post 6th Straight Win, Stay Atop GSC

It wasn't a thing of beauty but the Lee women's basketball team posted its sixth straight victory on Thursday evening inside Walker Arena. The Lady Flames improved to 8-1 in Gulf South Conference play and 14-3 overall.

Lee overcame a sluggish third quarter in winning 58-43 over the Falcons from the University of Montevallo. The loss dropped the Falcons to 5-3 in league play and 9-7.

The Lady Flames will wrap up a four-game home stand on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they play host to the University of West Alabama. The Lady Tigers will be trying to bounce back from a Thursday night defeat at Alabama Huntsville.

"We lost our focus in the third quarter and allowed Montevallo to edge closer that we would have liked," said Lee head coach Marty Rowe after the win. "Overall, it wasn't a bad performance but we are going to have to play better, especially when we hit the road next week against Mississippi College and Delta State.

While Abby Bertram carried a lot of the scoring load in the first half and finished with 15 points, freshman Haley Schubert played tough in the second 20 minutes and finished with 16 points and four assists. Taylor Boggess countered with eight markers while Becca Cheeks pitched in with six points and a team leading eight rebounds as the Lady Flames won the rugged board battle 30-29.

Lee led 18-12 at the end of the first period and held the Falcons to just four points in the second frame and led 33-16 at the half. The scoring slowed in the third frame with each team scoring only eight points and Montevallo outscored the Lady Flames 19-17 in the final 10 minutes, much to the dismay of Coach Rowe.

"Although it wasn't one of our better games, we still celebrate after every victory," said the Lee coach.

Overall, the Lady Flames shot 40 percent from the field (20-of-50) and 36 percent from 3-point range (9-of-25). They were awarded only 12 free throws and converted nine.

Nautika Philpot led the visitors with 16 points. Savannah Lee came off the bench to give her team a lift with 10 points. Kourtnie Smith led her team with six rebounds while Shyan Flack garnered five boards and Aaliyah Rice pulled down four.
