JACKSON, Tenn. - The Lee men's basketball team held off a late charge by the Union Bulldogs to remain undefeated in Gulf South Conference play with a 71-67 win on Thursday night from Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
The Flames have now won seven in a row overall and are 8-5 and 5-0 in league play.
Union saw its comeback effort short-circuited with an untimely technical foul with just 1:50 remaining in the game. The Flames lead 67-65 at the time of the foul.
From there Lee salted the game away at the foul line and with tough defense, allowing Union just one field goal in the final 2:33.
Thanks to 15 first half points from junior forward Colton Blevins, the Flames jumped out to a 38-29 advantage at the intermission. The Flames broke up open a close game with a 14-7 run to close out the final five minutes of the half.
Senior Cody Jones heated up in the second half and finished with a team-high 17 points, going 3 of 5 from the 3-point line. Ryan Montgomery added 14 points and six rebounds while Michael McGuirk tallied 12.
Coach Smith's club shot an efficient 26 of 52 (50 percent) from the field. The Flames were 6 of 18 (33.3 percent) from beyond the arc and tossed in 13 of 17 (76.5 percent) from the charity stripe.
Priding itself on defense over the course of the seven-game win streak, Lee followed the same script allowing the Bulldogs to convert just 25 of 63 (39 percent) from the field and 6 of 19 (31.6 percent).
Samory Gueye led the home team with 21 points. Bryson Butler registered 15 points while Terrandus Smith Tylandrius Parks each had 11. Union falls to 7-6 and is now 2-3 in league play.
The Flames will put their win streak on the line again on Saturday as they travel to Memphis to take on Christian Brothers. The Bucs (8-4, 3-1) always present a challenge, especially on their home court, and will enter rested after having the night off. Tip off is set for 4 p.m. EST.
