Volleyball Falls in Five At Shorter

ROME, Ga. – A difficult season continued Friday evening for the Lee volleyball team as it fell in five sets at rival Shorter.

The Lady Flames outlasted the Hawks, 27-25 in the first but the home team bounced back to even things at 1-1 with a 25-20 victory in set two.

Lee claimed set three, 25-23 but stumbled to a lopsided 25-13 loss in the fourth set before losing the match, 15-11 in the tiebreaker.

Bailey Kress led the Lady Flames with 15 kills while Abby Stroh tallied 13 and Quinne Daoust posted nine. Hanna Matthews registered a double-double with 34 assists and 13 digs.

The match mirrored the first meeting between these two rivals back on Oct. 15 when the Lady Flames topped Shorter, 3-2 in Walker Arena.

Danielle Melton led the Hawks with 16 slams while Lacee Glover (10) and Annie Veldhuis (10) joined her in double-figures. Glover also posted 19 digs while Kendall Vondra (27) and Taryn Cycholl (18) teamed up at the setter position.

Shorter hit .170 as a team with 58 kills and 25 errors while the Lady Flames posted a 0.78 attack percentage with 50 kills and 33 mistakes.

The loss marks the 10th straight defeat on the year for Lee as it falls to 9-20 and 2-12 in the GSC. The win moves Shorter to 9-19 and 2-11 in the league.

The Lady Flames will wrap up the season next weekend with the annual Volley For A Cure match on Friday at 7 p.m. against Union and a Saturday afternoon (Nov. 16) at 1 p.m.
