BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Antonio Pons was named the Gulf South Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his performances last week. The junior from Los Angeles, Chile, was 3-0 in singles competition and teamed with Daniel Prata to record a 3-0 week at No. 3 doubles.
Pons and Prata won their three doubles matches against Carson-Newman, Lees-McRae and Chattanooga by a combined 18-0 score.
In singles action, Pons beat Carson-Newman's Marc Bantel 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles before moving up to No. 3 singles for a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Lees-McRae's Matt Meluch. In the exhibition at Chattanooga, Pons overcame a 6-3 first set loss with 6-3 wins of his own in the next two sets to clinch the victory over Simon Bustamante at No. 4 singles.
"Antonio had a great week," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "His singles win at Chattanooga was very impressive, he was able to fight his way back from a set down. He's been a valuable addition to our men's program."
The Flames are 3-0 and open their GSC schedule on Saturday against West Florida. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the DeVos Tennis Center.
