Jones Leads Flames Past Shorter in Home Finale

Senior Cody Jones made the most of his final game in Walker Arena as he scored 23 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Flames past rival Shorter, 75-62 on Thursday evening.

The win improved the Flames to 15-13 on the year as they finish 12-8 in the Gulf South Conference. Lee will enter the GSC Tournament on Tuesday as the seventh seed and will travel to West Alabama for a rematch with the Tigers after two close regular season loses. Tip time is set for 8 p.m. EST.

Lee shot 50 percent from the field and limited the Hawks to just 33.3 percent shooting. The Hawks did connect on 9 of 21 3-point attempts while the Flames converted 6 of 17. Lee held a commanding 40-26 advantage on the glass.

Parker Suedekum and Colton Blevins both added 14 points in the winning effort. Ryan Montgomery was held to six points but made his presence felt in the rebounding department with a team-high 10.

"First off, all Glory to God for giving me the opportunity to play college basketball. Most players don't get this chance to experience the game at this level," said Jones. "I've just felt like I've been able to play loose and confident over the last several games and that's really helped me to settle down in the big moments and help my team anyway I can."

Drew Thomas led the Hawks with 15 points and was 7 of 7 from the foul line. Frenki Lilaj chipped in 11 points while Joe Russell and Jaylin Brown added 10 each. A difficult season for Shorter comes to an end with a final mark of 2-26.

The Flames opened up a 36-21 advantage at the half and never allowed the Hawks to climb back into the game in the second half.

"This time of year you want to be playing your best basketball. I thought Cody has been playing really inspired basketball this whole season and did a great job tonight," said head coach Bubba Smith. "Now we have to get ready to go on the road in a postseason, do or die situation. The good thing is we have played well on the road and while West Alabama is very talented we've had some close battles with them that could have gone either way. I like our momentum and our mindset going into Tuesday."
